How to use this map
Sidebar controls
Research Area — dementia or alzheimer; both allow drill-down to cities and centres.
Period — drag the slider handles to choose any window of years (researcher counts may show ~ as approximations). Windows overlap, so never compare sums across them.
Continent — restricts the map, the listings and the ranking universe to one continent.
Indicator — the metric colouring the map, sorting the tables and driving the charts.
View — Indicators (map, year chart and listings) or Country collaboration (international collaboration network and heatmap, with publications and citations only: rates per country pair are dominated by a few shared papers).
📈 Ranking — appears for count indicators: year-by-year ranking evolution of the listed entities (Barcelona/Madrid/Spain always highlighted).
≥ N docs — hides entities below a documents threshold. Auto (default) keeps, in cities listings, the largest cities that together account for about 80% of the listed publications and have at least 10 each, so rates are not led by cities with a handful of papers. The share is an estimate: a publication with several cities counts in each of them.
Groups / Leagues — alternative rankings: statistical technical ties (Poisson noise) or natural-break leagues; each group shares one position.
Export Excel — downloads the table as rendered.

Ranking chart — one line per listed entity; lower is better; historical collapses clip below the visible band (exact position in the tooltip).

Methodological notes
Custom periods — the preset periods (2011–2025, 2017–2021, 2021–2025) are computed directly from the publications. Any other window chosen with the slider is computed on the fly from the yearly values:
Publications and Citations are added year by year, and RCI, Top 10% and Intl. collab. % are averaged weighting each year by its publications. All of them are exact.
% Women is estimated from the yearly values; it usually stays within one point of the exact figure. It is marked ~.
Researchers cannot be recomputed: a researcher who publishes in several years appears in each of them, and the yearly values do not say who is the same person. The value shown is the average number of researchers per year in the window, about a third of the distinct researchers of the whole window. It is marked ~ and is not comparable with the preset periods (for example, Spain shows 6,555 researchers in 2021–2025 but about 2,000 in a custom window of the same length).
Countries shown — the 32 countries with 500 or more Dementia publications in 2021–2025. The remaining countries are grouped in the Other countries row and still count in the continent and world totals.
% Women — share of women among researchers whose gender could be identified; researchers of unknown gender are left out of the calculation. Earlier versions of this map divided by all researchers, so values are now higher (e.g. Spain rises above 50%). The unidentified share varies widely across countries, so this definition compares them more fairly.
